Installation as Design

Installation as Design

Right now there is a wonderful installation at Johansson Projects in Oakland. I love this show, particularly since it shows us how the worlds of art and design can work together.

Ramos is a very young artist who uses color, shape, found materials, and then stages all of these elements of design. I believe she goes through a similar process that I use when designing a space or curating art. Sometimes the process is planned and very deliberate, and other times I use less of a big picture and am more spontaneous in my designs.

In Ramo’s installation the eye is encouraged to move around the space guided by the varied shapes, colors, found objects, and sculptural elements. I love the dreamy blue valise that is part of the larger installation, it makes the work feel familiar and whimsical.

In the world of art and design our goal is also to guide the audience’s eye around the space. Like Ramos, we accomplish this by providing a design with interesting aesthetic choices for furniture as well as beautiful objects of art and design.
